Deputies from the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office were called at approximately 1:40 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, to a stretch of Point Lookout Road near Bellevue Lane in Helen, where there was a report of a single-vehicle crash that saw a truck overturn, officials said.

The initial investigation into the crash determined that a 17-year-old driver from Mechanicsville was driving south on Point Lookout Road, when he lost control negotiating a curve.

According to the sheriff’s office, the teen's Chevrolet Trailblazer - which had three passengers inside - went off the road, struck a ditch, and turned over.

One of the passengers, Mechanicsville resident Abigail Thorpe, 18, was found unconscious at the scene of the crash by first responders, and she was rushed to an area shock trauma hospital for treatment of what were described as “incapacitating injuries.”

Investigators noted that speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
